Baseball Recap: Indianapolis Shortridge Blue Devils vs. Muncie Burris Owls
Indianapolis Shortridge had lost three straight on the road, but on Saturday they dropped their record down to 2-11 to make it four. They came up short against the Muncie Burris Owls, falling 21-5. If the Blue Devils were looking for revenge after losing 10-0 to the Owls when the teams met back in April of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.
Indianapolis Shortridge saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Joshua Pena-Mendez, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
As for Muncie Burris, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 8-9. That 16 run margin sets a new team best for them this season.
On Muncie Burris' side, Solomon Muliiira made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out 15 batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Those 15 strikeouts gave Muliiira a new career-high. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. He has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last five times he's played.
In other batting news, Nicolas Bontzek was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with five RBI, two runs, and one triple. Those five RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Cameron Milleman, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI.
Indianapolis Shortridge wasted no time getting back out on the field and has already played their next game, a 22-7 loss against Seton Catholic on the 17th. As for Muncie Burris, they have also already played their next contest, a 4-0 defeat against Blue River Valley on the 14th.
