Basketball Recap: Waverly Takes a Loss

Waverly was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their seventh straight defeat. They were dealt an 85-41 loss at the hands of the Bennington Badgers. While losing is never fun, the Vikings can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 190th, while the Badgers are ranked 33rd).

When it comes to explaining why Waverly lost, don't look at Ashton Heffelfinger. Despite the final result, he went 6 of 12 en route to 15 points.

Austin Kaiser was his usual excellent self, going 10 for 21 on his way to 24 points along with eight rebounds and five assists for Bennington. Kaiser has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last five times he's played. Another player making a difference was Blaize Jung, who went 5 of 7 en route to 12 points.

Waverly's defeat dropped their record down to 1-11. As for Bennington, the win was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-5.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Waverly will venture away from home to square off against Seward at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Bennington, they will head out on the road to face off against Standing Bear on Tuesday.
