Softball Game Preview: Taft Eagles vs. Antioch Sequoits

The Taft Eagles will venture away from home to square off against the Antioch Sequoits at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Taft will roll into the matchup after a wild two-game stretch: they only put up two runs on Thursday, then bounced right back against Hancock on Tuesday. Taft's pitcher stepped up to hand Hancock a 13-0 shutout. The win continues a trend for Taft in their matchups with Hancock: they've now won six in a row.

Michaela Power made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with three RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Victoria Perez, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four runs and one double. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. Mia Perez was another key player, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Taft kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. They are 8-1 when they post 11 or more hits.

Meanwhile, Antioch came tearing into Tuesday's contest with eight straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.4 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They were the clear victors by an 11-4 margin over the Eagles.

Antioch pushed their record up to 9-5 with the victory, which was their fifth straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for Taft, their record now sits at 10-6.

Taft might still be hurting after the 12-2 loss they got from Antioch in their previous meeting back in April of 2023. Can the Eagles avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
