League recap: Overton falls to upstart Elm Creek

D1 District 9 (8 Man) recap Oct. 9, 2012

Elm Creek scored a stunning upset when it knocked off Overton, 26-13. At the time, the Eagles was ranked 16th in the state, while the Buffaloes was 26th.

Elm Creek was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after topping Overton. Stan Wissel's team came in at 21 in the state poll after placing at number 26 last week.

Caden Weverka and Wyatt Anderson gave Arapahoe a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Weverka threw for 29 yards and two touchdowns, while Anderson ran for 151 yards. Teammate Weverka added to the ground attack by rushing for 140 yards.

Anthony Shimmin made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Warriors topped Alma. The defensive back grabbed two interceptions.

Brady Stuhmer provided a threat through the air and on the ground as the Cardinals fell to Arapahoe. He completed eight passes for 143 yards and one touchdown and also ran for 54 yards. Stuhmer's favorite target this week was Chris Simmons, who caught three passes for 82 yards.

Alma's Stuhmer and Jarrod Bantam have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading D1 District 9 (8 Man) in both passing and receiving yards. Stuhmer has thrown for 914 yards this season, while Bantam, a 6-foot-1 receiver, has 18 catches for 436 yards. Dustin Sealey's team's Weverka leads the league in rushing yards with 814.

A big matchup in the league this week will be when Isaac Frecks' team takes on the Buffaloes. As it stands, the Cardinals are in fourth, while Elm Creek is in second.

The Warriors took down Alma 76-12 last week, the largest margin of any game. Weverka in the win.
