Softball Recap: Tonawanda Timberwolves vs. Griffith Institute Griffins

Tonawanda had lost six straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 0-6 to make it seven. They came up short against the Griffith Institute Griffins, falling 16-4. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Griffins this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 23-7 two weeks ago.

As for Griffith Institute, they have been performing well recently as they've won six of their last eight matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-3 record this season. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six contests by six runs or more this season.

For Griffith Institute's part, Olivia Mesch was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She tossed six innings while giving up just two earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Mesch has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, five RBI, and three runs. Those five RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Grace Ricci was incredible, getting on base in all five of her plate appearances with five runs, two stolen bases, and one triple. She continues to improve, besting her previous run total in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Mia Rogers, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Tonawanda will challenge rival Kennedy at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Griffith Institute is set to square off against their familiar foe Cleveland Hill at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
