Basketball Recap: Jasiah Saunders Key Part of a Team Effort in WILDCATS Win

On Tuesday, the Sotomayor WILDCATS strolled past the Marshall Rams with points to spare, taking the game 66-47. Given the WILDCATS's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 268th, while the Rams are ranked 642nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Sotomayor got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jasiah Saunders out in front who went 6 of 13 en route to 16 points along with six boards and five assists. Saunders has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Olubunmi Odewole, who went 6 of 10 en route to 14 points along with six boards and three steals.

Marshall's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Tayvion Nelson, who posted nine points and five rebounds. The dominant performance gave Nelson a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jason Vidaurri, who put up nine points and eight assists.

Sotomayor's win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 9-9. As for Marshall, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 8-12.

Sotomayor will square off against Holmes at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Sotomayor is facing Holmes at the right time seeing as Holmes is stuck on a nine-game losing streak. As for Marshall, they will challenge Harlan at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Marshall is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 57.9 points per game this season.
