Basketball Recap: Oxford Victorious

Oxford hadn't done well against West Elk recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Oxford Wildcats skirted past the West Elk Patriots 38-36. This was a revenge game for the Wildcats: when they faced off against the Patriots back in January, they had to take a 41-37 loss.

Oxford had a senior duo take command as Yasmin Gardea went 6-for-15 to rack up 15 points and five steals and Makhila Maupin posted 12 points in addition to eight rebounds and five steals. Maupin has become a key player for Oxford: the team is 3-1 when she posts at least five steals, but 3-11 otherwise. Abreyan Walker was another key player, putting up four points along with five blocks and three steals.

Oxford's victory bumped their record up to 6-12. As for West Elk, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-11.

Oxford wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next match, a 39-28 loss against Bluestem on the 17th. As for West Elk, they will face off against Sedan at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
