Softball Recap: Hollins Sets Scoring Season-High Against Northeast

Hollins hadn't done well against Northeast recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Hollins Royals walked away with a 20-17 victory over the Northeast Vikings. The Royals' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

Hollins got a massive performance out of Ava Vargas, who got on base in five of her six plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and three RBI. That's the most RBI Vargas has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Hailey Mercado, who scored three runs and stole Four bases. while getting on base in all five of her plate appearances.

Hollins hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.

Hollins has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. This is the second loss in a row for Northeast and nudges their season record down to 3-4.

Hollins will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Clearwater Central Catholic at 7:00 p.m. on March 24th. Northeast will also get a bit of a break before their next match: they'll face off against Pinellas Park at 7:00 p.m. on March 25th.
