Last Friday, Douglas Byrd was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 40-34 to Purnell Swett. Douglas Byrd has struggled against Purnell Swett recently, as their game on Friday was their sixth consecutive lost matchup.
The losing side was boosted by Jazmine Burns, who scored 16 points along with nine rebounds and two blocks. That's the first time this season that she scored 15 or more points. Another player making a difference was Jamiyah Carroll, who scored four points along with ten rebounds and six steals.
Meanwhile, Seventy-First beat Lumberton 63-54 on Friday.
Seventy-First's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Alani-Skye Wilkerson led the charge by scoring 18 points along with nine rebounds and two steals. Wilkerson also posted two blocks for the first time this season. Mariyah Massey was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with four steals.
Douglas Byrd's defeat dropped their record down to 2-11. As for Seventy-First, they have been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 6-7 record this season.
