Basketball Recap: Jerimiah Washpun's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Liberty over Xavier

Liberty was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 12th straight loss. They fell 75-65 to the Xavier Saints. While losing is never fun, the Lightning can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Iowa basketball rankings (they are ranked 214th, while the Saints are ranked 35th).

Several Lightning players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Jerimiah Washpun, who went 8-for-11 en route to 18 points. The dominant performance also gave Washpun a new career-high in field goal percentage (73%). Chase Goodheart was another key player, going 7-for-13 on his way to 19 points.

Liberty's defeat dropped their record down to 2-17. As for Xavier, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight matches, which provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season.

Coming up, Liberty will face off against Kennedy at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Xavier, they will venture away from home to face off against Iowa City West at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Xavier has been dominant on offense recently, having racked up an incredible 218 points over their last three games.
