Softball Recap: Gwinn Takes a Loss

Gwinn extended their losing streak to eight on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 1-8 in the process. They lost 12-2 to the Ishpeming Hematites. That's two games in a row now that the Modeltowners have lost by exactly ten runs.

Aubrey Paquin was cooking despite her team's loss, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

As for Ishpeming, they moved to 3-8 with that victory, which also ended their four-game losing streak. Considering their hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.

On Ishpeming's side, Miley Phillips made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Phillips was even better at the plate, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with four stolen bases and three runs. Those four stolen bases gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Marie Salisbury, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four stolen bases, three runs, and one double. That double marked the first that she has hit this season. Another player making a difference was Brynn Way-Lanala, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run.

Coming up, Gwinn will head out to square off against Westwood at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Patriots have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.78 runs per game on average), something the Modeltowners will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Ishpeming, they are taking a road trip to take on Calumet at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
