Baseball Recap: Antietam Takes a Loss

Antietam had lost three straight at home, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 3-11 to make it four. They lost 9-2 to the Oley Valley Lynx. Having soared to a lofty 18 runs in the game before, the Mountaineers couldn't push the score so high this time.

As for Oley Valley, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 10-5. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.3 runs on average over those games.

For Oley Valley's part, Luke Petersen and Nicholas DeBalko made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, Petersen struck out six batters over two innings while giving up just two earned runs off two hits (and only one walk). Meanwhile, DeBalko pitched 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those six strikeouts gave Petersen a new career-high. At bat, Petersen got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one RBI, while DeBalko went a perfect 1-for-1 with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Gryffin Cappellano was incredible, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Maxwell Gumeniski also deserves some recognition as he got his first hit of the season.

Looking ahead, Antietam will take on Tulpehocken at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Mountaineers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Trojans have averaged an impressive 7.2 runs per game this season. As for Oley Valley, they will face off against Kutztown at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Lynx 3.4, the Cougars 3.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
