Basketball Recap: Economedes Takes a Loss

Economedes played a tough match on Friday in which they were outscored in every quarter. They came up short against the Weslaco Panthers, falling 62-42. The defeat continues a trend for the Jaguars in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now lost four in a row.

When it comes to explaining why Economedes lost, don't look at Nathaniel De La Garza. Despite the final result, he posted 17 points. That was a full 40.5% of Economedes' points, marking the sixth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. Alexandro Zurita was another key player, putting up eight points.

Weslaco's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Pete Cantu, who went 5 for 8 on his way to 11 points and eight rebounds. Cantu is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Lino Milano, who scored 11 points and five rebounds.

Economedes' loss dropped their record down to 14-13. As for Weslaco, their win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 18-8.

Economedes wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 72-49 defeat against Edinburg North on the 20th. As for Weslaco, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 57-39 victory against La Joya on the 20th.
