Basketball Recap: Newton Takes a Loss

Newton and Andover Central squared off in some playoff action on Wednesday, but Newton had to settle for second. They took a 53-43 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Andover Central Jaguars. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Jaguars this season, with their most recent defeat being a 82-62 loss last Thursday.

Andover Central's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mason Meschke, who posted ten points and six rebounds. That's the most boards Meschke has posted since back in January of 2024. Brody DeGarmo was another key player, putting up 14 points along with six assists and five rebounds.

Newton has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-10 record this season. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 54.8 points over those games. The victory (which was Andover Central's fourth in a row) raised their record to 13-8.

Newton does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Andover Central, a feisty cat fight will be fought as Andover Central Jaguars take on Eisenhower Tigers at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. They will be up against Eisenhower's rather soft defense (which has allowed 51.62 points per match), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
