Basketball Game Preview: George West Longhorns vs. Mathis Pirates

George West and Mathis are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2021, but not for long. The George West Longhorns will host the Mathis Pirates at 6:15 p.m. on Friday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.

George West is headed into the contest having just suffered their biggest defeat since November 22, 2024 on Tuesday. They had to suffer through a 77-31 loss at the hands of West Oso. While losing is never fun, the Longhorns can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1089th, while the Bears are ranked 255th).

Meanwhile, Mathis was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They took a hard 47-29 fall against Aransas Pass.

Mathis' defeat dropped their record down to 7-9. As for George West, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 10-16.

George West came out on top in a nail-biter against Mathis in their previous meeting back in December of 2024, sneaking past 37-35. Does George West have another victory up their sleeve, or will Mathis turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
