Recap: Northfield Nighthawks vs. Westminster Wolves
The Northfield Nighthawks waltzed into their contest on Wednesday with five straight wins but they left with six. They came out on top against Westminster by a score of 54-43. Given Northfield's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 16th, while Westminster is ranked 100th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Northfield's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Nashara Ellerbee led the charge by scoring 19 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Ellerbee has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Laporsha Allen, who scored 14 points along with six rebounds.
When it comes to explaining why Westminster lost, one person who can't be blamed is Brooke Gomez. Despite the final result, she scored 20 points along with eight rebounds and three steals. That was a full 46.5% of Westminster's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Alicia Trujillo, who scored 11 points along with seven rebounds.
Northfield pushed their record up to 10-1 with that victory, which was their third straight on the road. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.3 points per game. As for Westminster, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 5-8.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Northfield will take on Skyview at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Westminster, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Mountain Vista at 7:00 p.m.
