Baseball Recap: Benjamin Gets the Win

Benjamin hadn't done well against Cardinal Newman recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Buccaneers walked away with a 7-3 win over the Crusaders. For the Buccaneers, this counts as revenge for the 9-5 victory the Crusaders walked away with the last time they faced one another back in February of 2025.

Johnny Havlicek made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. Havlicek was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with three RBI. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Thomas Harris looked comfortable as he tossed 2.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in February of 2025.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Derek Rubin, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base and one run. Brandon Owens also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

The win got Benjamin back to even at 2-2. As for Cardinal Newman, this is the second loss in a row for them and also nudges their season record down to 2-2.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Benjamin will face off against St. John Paul II Academy at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Eagles' pitching crew has only allowed two runs per game this season, so the Buccaneers' hitters will have their work cut out for them. As for Cardinal Newman, they will take on King's Academy at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Crusaders 3.8, the Lions 2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
