Basketball Recap: Sargent Comes Up Short

Sargent lost against Monte Vista back in February of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Sargent Farmers had to suffer through a 73-45 loss at the hands of the Monte Vista Pirates. While losing is never fun, the Farmers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 264th, while the Pirates are ranked 119th).

Sargent lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being Corbin Castillo, who posted ten points. That's the most points Castillo has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Lucas Garcia, who scored six points along with seven boards and four steals.

It was another big night for Azariah Hurtado, who dropped a double-double on 26 points and 12 steals for Monte Vista. That makes it seven consecutive games in which Hurtado has scored at least a third of Monte Vista's points. Alex Marquez was another key player, almost dropping a double-double on 16 points and nine steals.

Sargent has traveled a rocky road recently having lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-7 record this season. As for Monte Vista, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine contests, which provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season.

Sargent will face off against Del Norte at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Del Norte will roll in looking for their fourth straight victory, something Sargent surely won't give up without a fight. As for Monte Vista, they will venture away from home to square off against Montezuma-Cortez at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Monte Vista is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 53.7 points per game this season.
