MaxPreps 2017 Florida preseason high school softball Fab 5, presented by the Army National Guard

West Orange remains team to beat, but also watch out for American Heritage, Oakleaf, Lake Region and Coral Springs Charter in the Florida softball #MaxPrepsFab5.

2017 Florida Preseason Softball Fab 5, presented by the Army National Guard

1. West Orange (Winter Garden)

2016 record: 30-1
Head coach: Todd LaNeave

The Warriors claimed the Florida Class 9A state title last year and finished as the No. 5 team in the Xcellent 25 National Softball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. West Orange brings back a loaded lineup led by Maggie Wheless, who batted .411 with 23 RBIs and six home runs. Lexie Blair will also be a force after batting .567 and racking up 44 RBIs. Pitcher Lauren Mathis should own the circle after boasting a 25-1 record and holding a near spotless ERA of 0.15.

2. American Heritage (Plantation)
2016 record: 26-2
Head coach: Marty Cooper



The Patriots were the Florida Class 6A state champions and finished as the No. 20 squad in the Computer Rankings. American Heritage Plantation returns a ton of offensive firepower, headed by sophomore Jordyn Griffith, who batted .438 with 34 RBIs and four home runs. Olivia Saviskas will be the primary pitcher after posting a 6-1 record and owning a 0.92 ERA.

3. Oakleaf (Orange Park)
2016 record: 27-3
Head coach: Christina Thompson

Oakleaf notched 27 victories and reached the Florida Class 8A regiona; finals last season. Look for sophomore Baylee Goddard to be a prime performer after batting .462 with 30 RBIs and six home runs. Kelsey Sweatt will control the circle after registering a 14-2 record and 0.85 ERA.

4. Lake Region (Eagle Lake)
2016 record: 25-3, Class 7A state runner-up
Head coach: John Bridges

Lake Region reached the Florida Class 7A state finals and completed last season as the No. 18 team in the Computer Rankings. Brandice Boatwright will spearhead the offensive charge after cranking 30 hits, 19 RBIs and batting .345. Pitcher Mary Haff should be formidable after recording a 20-2 record and impressive 0.32 ERA.

5. Coral Springs Charter
2015 record: 26-3, Class 5A state champion
Head coach: Mark Montimurro

Coral Springs Charter reeled off 26 wins and captured the Florida Class 5A state championship last season. The Panthers will rely on do-it-all senior Allison Muraskin after batting .392 and notching 32 RBIs. She also dominated from the circle and posted a 23-3 record and held a 0.55 ERA.
