Highland Prep West took care of business in their home opener (barely) on Friday. They pulled ahead with a 58-57 photo finish over the Great Hearts Anthem Eagles. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the HORNETS have posted since January 13th.

Highland Prep West can attribute much of their success to Collin Aska, who shot 78% from the field on his way to 17 points along with five boards and three steals. Those 78% shooting accuracy gave Aska a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Michael Porter, who posted 11 points and eight steals.

Several Eagles players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Austin Melancon, who went 5-for-11 to rack up 16 points and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Cole Schirm, who dropped a double-double with 13 points and ten rebounds.

Great Hearts Anthem's defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.

Highland Prep West and Great Hearts Anthem will both get a bit of extra prep time before their next contests. The next time the HORNETS see the court they'll take on Wickenburg at 7:00 p.m. on December 2. As for Great Hearts Anthem, their break will end when they face North Phoenix Preparatory Academy at 7:00 p.m. on December 9.
