Baseball Recap: Clemente Takes a Loss

Clemente extended their losing streak to six on Wednesday, dropping them down to 3-10. They came up short against the Farragut Admirals, falling 22-5. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Admirals this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 13-4 on Sunday.

As for Farragut, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 11 contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 9-10 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.2 runs over those games.

For Farragut's part, Ben DeMateo and Robert Trejo made a splash no matter where they played. Throwing, DeMateo struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Meanwhile, Trejo tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. DeMateo has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in ten consecutive appearances. At bat, DeMateo got on base in four of his six plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one double, while Trejo got on base in three of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. DeMateo has become a key player for Farragut: the team is 8-3 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-7 otherwise.

In other batting news, Freddy Garcia was a standout: he got on base in four of his five plate appearances with five stolen bases, four runs, and one RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Farragut's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 6-10 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Nico Roman, who went 2-for-4 with four runs, two doubles, and one stolen base.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Clemente will welcome Goode STEM Academy at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Farragut, they will be playing at home against Curie at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
