Softball Recap: Hernando Wins Going Away Against Academy at the Lakes

The matchup between Hernando and Academy at the Lakes on Wednesday hardly resembled the 3-1 effort from their previous meeting. Hernando put the hurt on Academy at the Lakes with a sharp 21-5 win. Considering the Leopards have won seven games by more than nine runs this season, Wednesday's blowout was nothing new.

Lily Jernigan made a splash no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched four innings while giving up just one earned (and four unearned) runs off five hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Hernando got a massive performance out of Ammarae Easton, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one triple. That triple marked the first that Easton hit this season. Ariana Covell was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3.

Hernando was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .500. They are a perfect 6-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

The victory made it two in a row for Hernando and bumps their season record up to 7-5. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 21.0 runs over those games. As for Academy at the Lakes, their loss dropped their record down to 3-6.

Looking ahead, Hernando will challenge Tarpon Springs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Hernando is facing Tarpon Springs at the right time seeing as Tarpon Springs is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Academy at the Lakes, they wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next matchup, a 6-2 victory against Foundation Christian Academy on the 27th.
