Baseball Recap: Wendell Takes a Loss

Melba hit Wendell with a five-run seventh inning on Saturday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Trojans fell just short of the Mustangs by a score of 9-8. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Mustangs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 9-2 back in March.

Gunner Jones put in work while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in two of his four plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. He is becoming a predictor of Wendell's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 2-1 (and 7-15-1 when he doesn't).

In other batting news, Julian Ponce was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Wendell: the team is 8-4 when he posts at least two runs, but 1-12-1 otherwise. Santos Suarez was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Wendell has been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 9-16-1 record this season. As for Melba, their victory bumped their record up to 12-15.

As of now, neither Wendell nor the Mustangs have any future games scheduled.
