Softball Game Preview: St. Peter Saints vs. Belle Plaine Tigers

The St. Peter Saints will challenge the Belle Plaine Tigers at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. St. Peter hasn't scored more than a single run for three games straight, a trend the team is eager to reverse.

St. Peter fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Rockford on Saturday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Rockets by a score of 2-1.

Devyn Welp spent all nine innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up 12 Ks. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.7 strikeouts per game.

On the hitting side, Courtlynn Spessard made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and got on base in all four of her plate appearances with two stolen bases. Another player making a difference was Ashley Liebl, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run.

Meanwhile, Saturday just wasn't the day for Belle Plaine's offense. They fell just short of Randolph by a score of 1-0 on Saturday. The game marked the first time this year in which the Tigers were not able to get on the board.

Belle Plaine's loss ended a four-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 5-2. As for St. Peter, they now have a losing record of 3-4.

St. Peter couldn't quite get it done against Belle Plaine when the teams last played back in April of 2024 as they fell 4-0. Can the Saints avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
