Softball Game Preview: Lawrence County Cougars vs. Hancock Hawks

The Lawrence County Cougars will face off against the Hancock Hawks at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Last Thursday, it was close, but Lawrence County sidestepped Enterprise for a 7-5 victory. That's two games straight that the Cougars have won by exactly two runs.

Laicie Bridges was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over 4.1 innings while giving up just two earned runs off six hits (and only one walk). That's the most strikeouts she has posted since back in April of 2024. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 2-for-4.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Zabrina Madison, who scored two runs while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. Those runs were her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Addie Raye Pennington, who went 1-for-5 with one home run.

Meanwhile, Hancock beat St. Martin 5-1 on Thursday. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Hawks.

Teegan DeWitt spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on two hits and racked up 18 Ks. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Aubre Martin was excellent, getting on base in all three of her plate appearances with three stolen bases and one double. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. Abigail Carver was another key player, getting no hits from her three at bats.

Lawrence County has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-2 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.3 runs over those games. Hancock's win bumped their record up to 5-1.
