Baseball Game Preview: New Paltz Huguenots vs. Saugerties Sawyers

The New Paltz Huguenots are taking a road trip to challenge the Saugerties Sawyers at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Saugerties took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on New Paltz, who comes in off a win.

New Paltz took a nine-run loss the last time they faced off against Wallkill, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Huguenots sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 2-0 win over the Panthers on Monday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Huguenots have posted since May 17, 2024.

Jack Maiale made a splash while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 12 over seven innings pitched. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because New Paltz is 2-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 4-7 otherwise. Maiale was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one stolen base.

Maiale wasn't the only one making solid contact as five players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Nick Drewnowski, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

Meanwhile, Saugerties fell victim to Roosevelt and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They lost 6-0 to the Presidents.

New Paltz's record is now 6-8. As for Saugerties, their defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-6.

New Paltz beat Saugerties 11-6 in their previous meeting back in April of 2024. Do the Huguenots have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Sawyers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
