Baseball Recap: West Covina's Victory on Monday Extends Winning Streak to Three

West Covina had already won two in a row and they went ahead and made it three on Monday. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 3-2 W against the Ontario Christian Knights.

Michael Gutierrez tossed a big game, striking out six batters over 6.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits (and only one walk). Those six strikeouts gave him a new career-high.

At the plate, Austin Nguyen was excellent, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs and one triple. He is becoming a predictor of West Covina's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 6-7 when he doesn't). The team also got some help courtesy of Marciano Ramirez, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.

West Covina's victory bumped their record up to 10-7. As for Ontario Christian, they have been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last nine games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 4-12 record this season.

West Covina and Ontario Christian could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Bulldogs (ranked 396th) will meet Newport Harbor (ranked 41st) at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Ontario Christian will square off against Beckman at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank disadvantage (552 vs. 248).
