Dorman is our pick as the top girls basketball team in South Carolina this season. Also watch out for Spring Valley, Dutch Fork, West Ashley and Greenwood.

1. Dorman (Roebuck)

Head coach: Valerie Whiteside
2012-13 finish: 23-5, 4A state finals

The Cavaliers bring back 10 players from a team that averaged 60 points per game last season. Returning starters include Khaila Webb (16 points, 5 rebounds per game), Jasmine Rogers (7 ppg, 2.6 assists per game) and Logan Hollis (5.8 ppg, 4.7 rpg).

2. Spring Valley (Columbia)
Head coach: Anne Long
2012-13 finish: 20-5, second round state tournament

Last year’s Region 4A Player of the Year and All-State selection Cierra Carter (19.7ppg, 8.3rpg, Furman University-commit) is one of four returning starters along with Akia Dunlap (8.7 ppg), Megan Davis (7.8 ppg) and Briana Hill (4.6 ppg), who hope to lead the Vikings deep into the playoffs.

3. Dutch Fork (Irmo)
Head coach: Faye Norris
2012-13 finish: 29-0, 4A state champions



Senior Sydney Shull (10.6 ppg, 3.8 apg) and juniors Morgan Williams (7.4 ppg) and Zhane Green (6.6 ppg) will lead a shorter but more defensive-minded team as the Silver Foxes aim to repeat as state champs.
 
4. West Ashley (Charleston)
Head coach: Maria Williams
2012-13 finish: 22-2, third round state tournament

Returning starters Dekeiya Cohen (27 ppg, 13 rpg), Jhanice Stokes (8 ppg, 8 rpg) and Jue McLemore (8 ppg) hope to lead the Wildcats deeper into the playoffs.

5. Greenwood
Head coach: Susan Thompson
2012-13 finish: 23-2, state quarterfinals

Senior Yanna Jones (14.7 ppg), junior Tianna Swearinger (14.2 ppg) and sophomore Tembre Moates (8.5 ppg) return to anchor what should be a strong Eagles team.
