Softball Game Preview: Otay Ranch Mustangs vs. Bonita Vista Barons

For the first time this season, Otay Ranch will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup. They will take on the Bonita Vista Barons at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in Otay Ranch's favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last three games.

Otay Ranch came out on top against El Capitan last Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive seven-run second inning. The Mustangs were the clear victors by an 11-1 margin over the Vaqueros.

Scarlett Martinez looked comfortable as she struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Avah Gonzales was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. Kaylah Franke also deserves some recognition as she got her first hit of the season.

Otay Ranch was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .375 or higher in three consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Bonita Vista fell victim to Poway and their airtight pitching crew on Monday. They took a 3-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Titans. The Barons have struggled against the Titans recently, as the game was their third consecutive lost meeting.

Otay Ranch pushed their record up to 10-8-1 with the victory, which was their tenth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.3 runs over those games. As for Bonita Vista, their loss dropped their record down to 16-4.

Otay Ranch couldn't quite get it done against Bonita Vista in their previous meeting back in May of 2024 as they fell 14-10. Can the Mustangs avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
