Basketball Recap: Cuero Comes Up Short

Cuero lost against La Vernia back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Cuero Gobblers lost to the La Vernia Bears at home by a 73-55 margin. While losing is never fun, the Gobblers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1114th, while the Bears are ranked 410th).

La Vernia's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Vaun Harris, who almost dropped a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. Another player making a difference was Brayden Zepka, who posted 16 points and three steals.

Cuero is on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 4-9. Those losses can't be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.3 points over those games. As for La Vernia, they are on a roll lately: they've won 11 of their last 12 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 23-9 record this season.

Cuero will have a little extra prep time after the loss as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Carrizo Springs at 6:30 p.m. on February 18th. One thing working in Cuero's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last six games. As for La Vernia, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next matchup, a 71-45 victory against John F. Kennedy on the 10th.
