Basketball Recap: Cape Hatteras Takes a Loss

Cape Hatteras scored the most points they've had this season on Friday, but it wasn't enough. They took a blow against the Manteo Redskins, falling 92-56. While losing is never fun, the Hurricanes can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 458th, while the Redskins are ranked 119th).

Despite the loss, Cape Hatteras still got an impressive performance from Ty Stephens, who went 7 of 16 en route to 20 points. Another player making a difference was Preston Stowe, who went 7 of 17 en route to 18 points and six rebounds.

Even though they lost, Cape Hatteras was working as a unit and finished the game with 14 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in December of 2023.

Kai McGilberry was a one-man wrecking crew for Manteo as he went 7 of 11 from beyond the arc on his way to 29 points. McGilberry continues to improve, besting his previous point total in each of the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Taylor Granitzki, who went 6 of 11 on his way to 15 points and five rebounds.

Cape Hatteras' loss dropped their record down to 2-4. As for Manteo, their record now sits at 5-1.

Cape Hatteras will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Camden County at 7:30 p.m. on January 8, 2025. Manteo and First Flight will compete for holiday cheer at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
