Basketball Recap: Southern Guilford Comes Up Short

Southern Guilford lost against Ben L. Smith back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Southern Guilford Storm lost 47-26 to the Ben L. Smith Golden Eagles. While losing is never fun, the Storm can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 406th, while the Golden Eagles are ranked 89th).

When it comes to explaining why Southern Guilford lost, don't look at Courtney Griffith. Despite the final result, she posted 12 points and four steals. That was a full 46.2% of Southern Guilford's points, marking the third time in a row she's put up more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Lanor'Risa Fordburnett, who scored five points and three steals.

Ben L. Smith was led to victory by Amani Williams and Kalicia DeBerry. Williams had 20 points, while DeBerry earned 18 points. DeBerry's evening made it five games in a row in which she has scored at least 15 points.

Southern Guilford's loss dropped their record down to 6-15. As for Ben L. Smith, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 17-3 record this season.

Southern Guilford wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 56-36 defeat against Eastern Guilford on the 7th. As for Ben L. Smith, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 71-30 victory against High Point Central on the 7th.
