Iowa is preparing for their first district matchup of the season on Friday. They will take on the Leesville Wampus Cats at 7:00 p.m. Iowa is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt wants to keep things rolling.
Iowa is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They put the hurt on St. Louis Catholic with a sharp 43-23 victory on Thursday. Considering the Yellowjackets have won four matchups by more than 19 points this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
This one was won in the trenches and the lion's share of the credit has to go to Kaston Lewis and J'Vien Adams. Lewis rushed for 169 yards and three touchdowns on only 11 carries while Adams gained 203 total yards and three touchdowns. Adams' longest reception was for an impressive 66 yards, which helps to explain his lofty yards per catch total.
Iowa was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 348 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 217 rushing yards in four consecutive contests.
One reason for the win was Iowa's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for three sacks. In that department, Gaven Brown was the leader with two.
Meanwhile, Leesville came up short against Benton on Thursday and fell 42-35. That's two games in a row now that the Wampus Cats have lost by exactly seven points.
Iowa will need to focus on slowing down Michael Davis Jr, one of several Leesville players who made an impact when they last played. He picked up 184 receiving yards and three scores. With that strong performance, Davis Jr is now averaging an impressive 112 receiving yards per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Trel Broom, who threw for 407 yards and four TDs.
This is the second loss in a row for Leesville and nudges their season record down to 1-4. As for Iowa, their record now sits at 5-0.

Friday's game will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Adams and Grant Braxton. Adams just won't slow down this season and has run in 5 touchdowns while averaging 122.6 rushing yards per game. Braxton has been a dominant force too and has run in 10 touchdowns while averaging 115.4 rushing yards per game.
Everything came up roses for Iowa against Leesville when the teams last played back in October of 2024, as the squad secured a 62-28 win. In that matchup, the Yellowjackets amassed a halftime lead of 35-14, an impressive feat they'll look to repeat on Friday.
