League recap: Cedar Grove tops Shabazz to extend winning streak

Cedar Grove extended the longest winning streak in Super Essex - Colonial this week by beating Shabazz, 26-20. The victory was the fourth in a row for the team.

Weequahic moved up to 110 from 142 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Indians were able to make the jump by defeating Montclair Kimberley Academy 50-0.

Cedar Grove's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Joe Slattery threw for 129 and two touchdowns and Paul Rufo had 69 yards receiving. On the ground Mike Rowe chipped in 75 yards. David Njuko helped Cedar Grove's passing attack out by catching three balls for 30 yards.

The Panthers' Slattery and Rufo have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Slattery has thrown for 816 yards this season, while Rufo, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 17 catches for 331 yards. The Cougars' Rob Pannullo leads the league in rushing yards with 319.

A big matchup in Super Essex - Colonial this week will be when Cedar Grove takes on Verona. At the moment, the Panthers are in second, while the Hillbillies are in fourth.

Weequahic took down Montclair Kimberley Academy 50-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
