Softball Recap: Newberry Beats Chiefland for Their Tenth Straight Victory

Newberry hadn't done well against Chiefland recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Newberry Panthers' pitcher stepped up to hand the Chiefland Indians a 5-0 shutout. The five-run effort marked the Panthers' lowest-scoring contest of the season, but in the end it didn't matter.

Not much got past Sarah Burns, who gave up just a hit and racked up 11 Ks to keep Chiefland off the board. With that strong performance, Burns is now averaging an impressive 5.4 strikeouts per game.

On the hitting side, Tristan Layfield was excellent, going 2-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one double. Another player making a difference was Gracie Mattson, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.

The victory keeps them at an undefeated 10-0. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.1 runs over those games. As for Chiefland, their loss was their third straight at home, which dropped their record down to 3-9.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Newberry will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against St. Augustine at 5:00 p.m. on March 28th. As for Chiefland, they will head out on the road to take on Crystal River at 6:00 p.m. on March 21st.
