Baseball Recap: Jefferson Takes a Loss

Jefferson dropped to 12-9-1 on Tuesday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins at home. They lost 19-1 to the Seguin Matadors. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Mustangs of the 6-0 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2025.

Jefferson saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Abelardo Flores, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run.

As for Seguin, the victory was the ninth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 19-8. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matchups by seven runs or more this season.

On Seguin's side, Griffin Welfel made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Welfel has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up a single earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI.

In other pitching news, Connor Taft looked comfortable as he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted three strikeouts, the most he's had since back in February.

Back at the plate, Seguin got a massive performance out of Ethan Tipple, who went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases, four runs, and one triple. That's the most stolen bases Tipple has posted since back in February. Another player making a difference was Nathaniel Herrera, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with four runs, two stolen bases, and two RBI.

We've got plenty of inter-district action coming up soon. Jefferson is set to face off against their familiar foe Sam Houston at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Seguin will take on rival Brackenridge at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Matadors 3.9, the Eagles 3.7) so any runs scored will be well earned.
