Football Recap: Derrek Vowell Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Granbury

Azle's game last Friday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Thursday. Everything went their way against the Granbury Pirates as they made off with a 35-13 victory. The high-flying offensive performance was a huge turnaround for the Hornets considering their ten-point performance the game before.

Azle's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Derrek Vowell, who threw for 186 yards and four TDs while completing 73.7% of his passes. Vowell's passing game has become a key predictor of the Hornets' success: the team is 2-1 when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 0-5 otherwise. Azle's leading receiver Aiden Mackey was Vowell's top target yet again, picking up 93 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Azle didn't let much get past them through the air: they limited Granbury to a completion percentage of just 44%. Given Vowell's standout performance, it's clear the Pirates' secondary just wasn't on the same level.

Although Granbury took the loss, they still got scores from Austin Reeves and Conner VanQuill.

Azle's victory bumped their record up to 2-6. As for Granbury, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-6.

Coming up, Azle will challenge Aledo at 7:00 p.m. on the 31st. The Hornets' defense better be ready for this one: the Bearcats have averaged an impressive 44.1 points per game this season. As for Granbury, they will face off against Denton at 7:00 p.m. on the 31st. The Pirates will be up against the Broncos' rather soft defense (which has allowed 34.25 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance.
