Mercyhurst Prep (Erie, Pa.)'s advantage, which at one point stood at 23 points, dwindled to seven before the final whistle blew on a 41-34 victory over
Cochranton (Pa.).
After taking the lead on a
Cornelius Barclay touchdown run in the first quarter, the Lakers led 20-6 at the half.
Mercyhurst Prep expanded its lead to 23 points entering the fourth quarter. MP scored three times in the third, including once on a Barclay touchdown run.
The Cardinals'
Chad Eisenhooth was the standout player for his team. The junior quarterback threw three touchdowns.
Barclay was the top performer for the Erie school. The senior running back ran for six touchdowns and kicked four extra points. He has now scored seven touchdowns on the season.
When the two teams played each other last season, the Lakers came away with a 26-0 victory.
The loss comes after Cochranton defeated Cambridge Springs 49-14 last week. The loss snapped Cochranton's 2-game winning streak.
Mercyhurst Prep (2-1) will play a District 10 Region 2 A game against Eisenhower next week, while Cochranton (2-1) will take on Union City also in a District 10 Region 2 A game.
