Softball Recap: Springfield Wildcats vs. Fairmont Firebirds
Springfield dropped to 8-11 on Monday, ending the team's three-game streak of wins on the road. They lost 20-6 to the Fairmont Firebirds. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Firebirds this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 18-8 on Friday.
Springfield saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Caelyn Cave, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
As for Fairmont, their win ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 12-10. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine matchups by seven runs or more this season.
On Fairmont's side, Jaylin Turner made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off three hits. Turner has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, Sophia Barnette and McKenna Kent did most of the damage at the plate: Barnette went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and five RBI, while Kent went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, six RBI, and two runs. That's the most hits Kent has posted since back in March. The team also got some help courtesy of Bailey Young, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.
