Baseball Recap: Gibault Catholic Falls to Granite City in First Game of Season

Gibault Catholic unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-field advantage in their season opener. They lost 19-6 to the Granite City Warriors on Tuesday. The defeat continues a trend for the Hawks in their meetings with the Warriors: they've now lost four in a row.

Peyton Schaefer put in work no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out six batters over four innings while giving up four earned runs off three hits (and only one walk). What's more, he gave up only one walk, the fewest he's had since back in March of 2024. He was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Tyler Frierdich was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring a run while going 2-for-3. Dylan Schaefer was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.

Looking ahead, Gibault Catholic will hit the road for the first time this season to take on Marquette Catholic at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Granite City, they will take on Roxana at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
