Blacksburg waltzed into their contest on Saturday with six straight wins... but they left with seven. They wrapped up 2024 with a 37-19 victory over the Spartanburg Day Griffins. Given the Wildcats' advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 107th, while the Griffins are ranked 226th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Blacksburg's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Essence Rodgers led the charge by putting up 11 points and three steals. Rodgers is crushing it when it comes to steals: she's grabbed at least two every time she's taken the court this season. Taylor Tessner was another key player, posting 12 points.

Blacksburg is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 10-5 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 51.2 points per game. As for Spartanburg Day, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-7.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games.
