Football Recap: Columbia Comes Up Short

Columbia dropped to 6-2 on Friday, ending the team's six-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season. They were outmatched by the Breese Central Cougars and fell 41-6. The contest marked the Eagles' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

Xavier Voegele threw for 147 yards and one TD. Jackson Lawal was his top target, picking up 94 receiving yards. On the ground, Jase Nelson rushed for 59 yards.

As for Breese Central, their victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-1. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six games by 35 points or more this season.

Breese Central's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Owen Kehrer led the charge by throwing for 222 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Those 222 passing yards gave Kehrer a new career-high. Cole Davis helped Kehrer out on the ground, rushing for 62 yards and two scores.

Columbia and Breese Central should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Illinois Rankings. The Eagles will face off against Jersey at 7:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank advantage (157 vs. 322). Meanwhile, Breese Central (ranked 66th) will meet Herrin (ranked 421st) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
