Basketball Recap: St. Mary's Takes a Loss

St. Mary lost against Modesto Christian back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Wednesday. The St. Mary's Rams took a blow against the Modesto Christian Crusaders, falling 73-43. While losing is never fun, the Rams can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 279th, while the Crusaders are ranked 28th).

When it comes to explaining why St. Mary's lost, don't look at Jayden Hinkston. Despite the final result, he went 5-for-10 to rack up 12 points. Another player making a difference was Will Stephens, who posted nine points.

Ry Atkins was a one-man wrecking crew for Modesto Christian as he went 7-for-11 on his way to 19 points and six rebounds. Those 19 points gave Atkins a new career-high. Damitrius (Zaire) Nelson also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

St. Mary's has been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-15 record this season. Modesto Christian's win was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 21-7.

St. Mary's didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 74-51 defeat against Lincoln on the 14th. As for Modesto Christian, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 74-35 victory against Pitman on the 19th.
