MERCEDES, Texas - The defense contributed on the scoring end for
Edcouch-Elsa (Edcouch, Texas) on Saturday, totaling six points as the Yellowjackets defeated
Mercedes (Texas) 20-17.
After nabbing the lead on a touchdown pass by
Rene Presas, the Tigers went into halftime with a 10-6 lead. The Yellowjackets took the lead to win the game on a touchdown run by
Miguel Mariscal in the fourth quarter.
Despite scoring zero points in the third, Edcouch-Elsa still trailed by four points going into the fourth quarter. But 14 points in the fourth helped EE pull out the victory.
The Edcouch school didn't take the lead for good until the the fourth quarter when Mariscal ran for a touchdown.
The Yellowjackets had given up an average of 10.9 points prior to the contest. The 17 points that Mercedes ended with were well below its average of 30.6 coming into the game.
A 21-7 Edcouch-Elsa victory was the result when the squads faced off last season.
The loss comes after Mercedes defeated Valley View 44-3 last week.
In a 4A Region IV District 32 game next week Mercedes (5-3) takes on Roma, and Edcouch-Elsa (7-1) will go up against Valley View also in a 4A Region IV District 32 game.
