Baseball Recap: Wayne County Gets the Win

Wayne County won against Lewis County on Saturday with five runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Wednesday. The Wildcats sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over the McNairy Central Bobcats. This was payback for the Wildcats, who suffered a 6-2 loss the last time these two teams met.

Graeme Polk was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off eight hits. Polk was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2025.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jacan Floyd, who went 3-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played.

Wayne County hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least three batters in four consecutive contests.

Wayne County now has a winning record of 4-3. As for McNairy Central, their defeat dropped their record down to 4-8.

Looking ahead, Wayne County will welcome Hughes at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The Lions have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed ten runs per game on average), something the Wildcats will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for McNairy Central, they will head out to square off against Alcorn Central at 1:00 p.m. on Friday. The Bobcats' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Golden Bears have averaged an impressive 7.2 runs per game this season.
