Softball Recap: Highland Comes Up Short

Highland extended their losing streak to 14 on Thursday, dropping them down to 3-21. They came up short against the Breese Central Cougars, falling 9-0. That's two games in a row now that the Bulldogs have lost by exactly nine runs.

As for Breese Central, they pushed their record up to 16-13 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. Those home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games.

For Breese Central's part, Eden Campanella made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, keeping things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out 14 over seven innings pitched. Campanella has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up a single earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

In other batting news, Kate Johnson was incredible, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs, and one stolen base. Those three doubles gave her a new career-high. Madison Ahle was another key player, going 1-for-4 with two runs and one triple.

Highland has already played their next game (against Centralia), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. As for Breese Central, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next matchup, a 6-2 defeat against Belleville East on the 15th.
