Softball Recap: Melbourne Beats Salem for Their Sixth Straight Victory

Melbourne came tearing into Thursday's game with five straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.6 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured a 6-5 W against the Salem Greyhounds. Six seems to be a good number for the Bearkatz as the team scooped up a win with the same number of runs in their previous game.

Kallie Thornton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned (and three unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up six Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in nine consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Grace Cross and Maggie Pierson did most of the damage at the plate: Cross went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI, while Pierson went 1-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. That's the most hits Cross has posted since back in April.

Melbourne's victory bumped their record up to 17-5. As for Salem, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 13-3.

Melbourne does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Salem, they are taking a road trip to take on Brookland at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Greyhounds 1.6, the Bearcats 3.6) so any runs scored will be well earned.
