Baseball Game Preview: St. Paul Swordsmen vs. Serra Cavaliers

St. Paul is 1-9 against Serra since April of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The St. Paul Swordsmen will venture away from home to square off against the Serra Cavaliers at 3:15 p.m. St. Paul's pitching crew has only allowed 2.3 runs per game this season, so Serra's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

St. Paul will bounce into Friday's match after beating Paraclete, who they had gone 0-4 against in their four prior meetings. St. Paul walked away with a 5-2 win over Paraclete on Tuesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Swordsmen.

Jonathan Lara looked comfortable as he tossed 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Troy Sibolboro, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and one stolen base. He has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Fernie Soto, who scored a run while going 2-for-3.

St. Paul hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Paraclete struck out seven times.

Meanwhile, Serra fell victim to Bishop Amat and their airtight pitching crew on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Lancers by a score of 1-0. The contest marked the first time this year in which the Cavaliers were not able to get on the board.

Serra's loss dropped their record down to 6-2. As for St. Paul, their victory was their first in the league, bumping their league record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 7-3.

St. Paul came up short against Serra in their previous matchup back in April of 2023, falling 7-2. Can St. Paul avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
