Basketball Recap: Sophia Orosco's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Karnes City over Nixon-Smiley

Karnes City lost against Nixon-Smiley back in January and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Karnes City Badgers took a 61-50 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs.

Karnes City's loss came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sophia Orosco, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 17 rebounds. Orosco has been hot, having also posted two or more steals the last six times she's played. Kalaura Olivares was another key player, putting up eight points along with ten boards and four steals.

Even though they lost, Karnes City smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 33 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in six consecutive matchups.

Nixon-Smiley's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Madison Yanes led the charge by going 5 of 12 on her way to 13 points and three steals. What's more, Yanes also posted a 67% three-point shooting accuracy, which is the highest she's posted since back in February of 2024. Another player making a difference was Janaelyn White, who posted eight points and seven rebounds.

Karnes City has traveled a rocky road recently having lost 13 of their last 16 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 14-18 record this season. As for Nixon-Smiley, the victory was the third in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 14-19.

Karnes City does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Nixon-Smiley, they will take on Columbus at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
