The Vernon Yellowjackets will venture away from home to face off against the Ponce De Leon Pirates at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Vernon is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.2 runs per game this season.
While Vernon's win against Bay wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Yellowjackets sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with an 11-9 victory over the Tornadoes on Monday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Yellowjackets needed considering they were shut out in their previous game.
The team relied heavily on Cheyenne Wilson, who scored four runs and stole a base while going 3-for-3. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Lila Owens was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three RBI.
Vernon lost a few balls and finished the game with two home runs. That's the most home runs they've managed all season.
Meanwhile, after low-scoring totals in their previous three contests, Ponce De Leon brought some dynamite into their most recent contest. They were the clear victors by a 16-0 margin over Graceville on Monday. The Pirates' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Clara Martin was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one hit in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing three bases while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Kiyann Alford was a standout: she scored three runs while going 1-for-2. Georgianna Churchwell also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
Vernon's record now sits at 4-12. As for Ponce De Leon, with the win, they broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 6-10.
Vernon came up short against Ponce De Leon in their previous matchup back in March, falling 9-4. Can the Yellowjackets avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
